Mouse Properties
Mouse properties can be changed to accommodate different situations. If you are left –handed, you can change the mouse properties so that it is easier for you to use the mouse. Another important and often forgotten aspect is: people with limited mobility can find it difficult to use the mouse. As an example, I introduced my grandmother to the Internet, she had no idea how to use a computer but she is smart and learned quickly. However, her right hand was not able to double-click the mouse fast enough. She had a bad case of arthritis in her right hand and she was quickly getting very frustrated. I changed the mouse properties so she could use her left hand, slowed down the double click speed and now she surfs the net everyday. Adjusting the mouse properties is an easy procedure if you know where to look for it. To access the mouse properties, click on Start, select Setting then select Control Panel. Once you are in the Control Panel, double click the Mouse. The Mouse Properties dialog box will open up. On the Buttons Tab, you will see Button configuration. This where you can changed the mouse from a Right-handed mouse to a Left-handed mouse. As a rule, the mouse will be pre-configured as Right-handed. You can tell it is so because the radio button next to Right-handed is selected. To change to the Left-handed mouse simply click on the radio button next to Left-handed. Lower on the same screen you will see Double-click speed. You can change the speed of the double-click by moving the slide bar towards or away from Slow or Fast. For people with mobility problems, drag the slider bar to Slow. You can then check the speed of the double-click. To do so simply double-click on the jack-in-the-box. Next, select the Pointers Tab. Here you can select a different pointer shape. Some shapes are easier to see for people with poor vision. Have the person next to you as you do this and select the pointer shape they can more easily see. Another problem the grandma had was her poor eyesight. She is 94 and her eyes are not what they once were, she was finding it very difficult to follow the mouse pointer. Again, the mouse properties came to the rescue. The Motion tab allows you to adjust the speed of the pointer as it moves across the screen. If you select the Show Pointer Trail option by putting a check in that box, images of the previous mouse position on the screen appear to create a trail, which makes it easier to see for people with poor vision. If you move the slider bar of the pointer speed, you can reduce or increase the speed of the pointer as it moves on the screen. Once you have made your entire selection click Apply to save the settings. Remember you can always go back and make more adjustments. The computer is made for everybody. Make sure to introduce these features to people who have poor mobility and to those who have poor vision.
